Algonquin Theater Productions is a not-for-profit theater company dedicated to moving shows on to the next level, whether that be Broadway, Off Broadway, regional, film or television.
In it's 8th Year, Algonquin Theater Productions mandate continues to be moving shows to the next level.
It has done just that by producing the Off Broadway productions Sessions The Musical, The Devil and Billy Markham and An Evening at the Carlyle. The company is led by Artistic Directors Merry Beamer, Tony Sportiello and Debra Whitfield. Last summer, ATP had big successes with Tech Support, The Grandfather Paradox and The Derek Jeter Plays.
ATP has enjoyed both critical and popular success Off-Broadway with Al Tapper’s Sessions, a musical that ran for over 300 performances in New York City before moving to Guadalajara, Mexico. Algonquin also produced Al Tapper’s cabaret An Evening at The Carlyle, which ran for more than six months, Levy Lee Simon's Same Train and a production of Shel Silverstein's The Devil and Billy Markham. Algonquin has had shows optioned by HBO, nineteen one act plays chosen for the Samuel French Short Play Festival.
National Pastime, performed in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, has been turned into a musical with an Off-Broadway run at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater August 2012, and with an intended move to Broadway 2012/2013. Additionally, Algonquin are partners with other theatrical entities in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Guadalajara and Mexico City and are reaching out further.
Algonquin Productions is committed to moving superior work so that the play can find a life outside of showcases. We do not develop new work; we want shows which are already developed, shows which are solid but have somehow flown under the radar screen of professional producers. We will then bring those works to the attention of people who make things happen.
Algonquin Productions wants to bring back the spirit of the 20's and 30's when the Algonquin Round Table was formed, featuring the likes of George S. Kaufman, Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, George Bernard Shaw and others. Theater reigned back then, with hundreds of shows being done and actors, writers and directors able to make a living from doing what they loved.
In a nutshell, we want to put the right plays in the hands of the right actors in front of the right people.
